Dr. Jandacek was trained as a chemist and received a B. A. from Rice University and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. After two years in the Army at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, he joined Procter and Gamble’s Miami Valley Laboratories in Cincinnati, where he worked until retiring in 2001. At Procter & Gamble he became interested in the chemistry of lipids and its effects on their metabolism. He studied the intestinal absorption of lipids and the nutritional, physical, and biological properties of olestra, a non-absorbable fat. He is listed as inventor on 11 granted and pending patents related to olestra and other lipids. He was instrumental in establishing a formal collaboration in obesity research between Procter and Gamble and the University of Cincinnati. He joined Dr. Tso’s laboratory as Adjunct Professor in 2001 and is studying the nutritional interaction of lipids with toxic lipophilic xenobiotics. He also directs the analysis of tissue fatty acids. This work has led to the discovery of a facile method for the measurement of intestinal fat absorption. This method is currently being validated in cystic fibrosis patients in a collaborative study with Dr. Heubi of Children’s Hospital. Dr. Jandacek is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Oil Chemists’ Society, and the American Society for Nutrition.
